Introduction and application of Alloy C-276

Page view
[Abstract]:
Alloy C-276 is a solid-reinforced Ni-Mo-chromium alloy containing a small amount of tungsten. Alloy C-276 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of harsh environments and media. As with many other nickel alloys, it is malleable and easy to shape and weld.

C-276 Alloy Feature

Alloy C-276 (2.4819 / N10276) can be used for many chemical processes that use both oxidized and reducing media. High concentrations of chromium and molybdenum allow the alloy to resist chloride erosion. Tungsten content further increases this resistance.

Corrosion Preventive

Alloy C-276 is one of the most general corrosion resistant alloys today. It is used in a variety of environments ranging from moderate oxidation to strong reducing conditions. Alloy C-276 has an excellent tolerance to sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, chloride, solvent, wet chloride gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine solutions. Alloy C-276 is excellent phosphorystable at all temperatures below the boiling point and at concentrations below 65%.

Alloy C-276 has excellent resistance to spot corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and oxidative atmosphere. Alloy C-276 also shows resistance to seawater corrosion under crevice conditions, which causes erosion in other commonly used materials.

Manufacturing and heat treatment:

The alloy C-276 may be formed using a variety of cold and thermal working processes. Like other nickel alloys, the C-276 alloy can be processed and hardened quickly, but can be cold-formed using aggressive methods such as deep pulling, pressing and stamping. Thermal forming shall be performed in a temperature range between 1600°F and 2250°F (870°C and 1230°C), with heavier parts heated to a minimum temperature of 2000°F before forming. It is recommended that the material be annealed after processing at an annealing temperature between 2050°F and 2150°F and then rapidly quenched in a reducing quenching bath with protective atmosphere or stirring. To obtain a reducing quenching bath, add 2% (by volume) of ethanol or propanol to the water.

Industry and applications:

Alloy C-276 has a wide range of applications in the chemical and petrochemical industries, in components in chloride-containing organic processes, and in catalytic systems. This material is especially suitable in the presence of high temperature, contaminated inorganic acids, solutions or organic acids (e. g. formic and acetic acids), and seawater. Application examples:

Paper and pulp industries, for example for digestion and bleaching tanks.

Wascrubers, agitators and wet ventilators in flue gas desulfurization system.

Equipment and components used for acid gas applications.

Acetic acid production reactor.

sulfuric acid cooler.

Methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI).

Manufacturing and processing of contaminated phosphoric acid.

High-temperature superconductor substrate.
